Abstract

Power quality (PQ) problems in electric power systems signify an interesting field of study to researchers. The increased use of power electronics devices have led to improved system efficiency and performance, while conversely drawing nonlinear currents thereby polluting the system. The distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) is one of the custom power devices used for mitigating power quality problems. This paper presents a technical review of the DSTATCOM employed for mitigation of such problems in the distribution corridor. The review intends to showcase a spectrum of DSTATCOM topologies and their associated control strategies for possible consideration by researchers and practitioners working in the area of PQ. Selection of a particular DSTATCOM design technique would depends on the type of the PQ problem that requires attention. The two major DSTATCOM topologies and their variants covered in this paper include power source topologies and inverter topologies, as presented under section 4.
